SEO for Plumbers: How Plumbing Companies Actually Get Found on Google

Most plumbing SEO advice is generic. Plumbing isn't: most valuable searches are local, many are emergencies, and a large share resolve in the map pack before anyone sees an organic result. Here's what that means for where to put the effort.

SEO for plumbers is the work of getting a plumbing company found when people nearby search for plumbing help on Google. Because plumbing searches are overwhelmingly local and often urgent, the most valuable placement is usually Google's map results — driven by your Google Business Profile — rather than the ordinary list of links beneath them. Effective plumbing SEO starts there, not with blog posts.

Key takeaways

  • Google says local results depend on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You control relevance and prominence; you cannot change distance.
  • For most plumbing companies, a complete and active Google Business Profile does more than any amount of website content.
  • One page per service, written about that service specifically, beats a single "Services" page listing everything.
  • Emergency searches behave differently — the page has to work on a phone, fast, with a number you can tap.
  • Reviews matter for both ranking and conversion. Buying or faking them risks a suspension.
  • A new plumbing website takes months, not weeks, to rank. Ads cover the gap.

How Google decides which plumbers to show

Google is unusually explicit about local search. Its own help documentation states that local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help):

Factor What Google means Can you change it?
Relevance How well your profile matches what was searched Yes — categories, services, description
Distance How far you are from the searcher, or the location they named No
Prominence How well known your business is — reviews, links, mentions Yes, slowly

That table is the whole strategy in miniature. Distance is fixed, so the work is entirely in relevance and prominence — and the map pack is where most of it shows up.

1. Your Google Business Profile comes first

For a plumbing company, the Google Business Profile is frequently the highest-return SEO asset you have, and it costs nothing but attention.

  • Verify it. An unverified profile is limited in where it can appear. This is the single most common gap we see.
  • Choose your primary category precisely. "Plumber" as the primary category, with specific secondary categories for what you genuinely do — drainage, water heater installation, emergency plumbing — where they apply.
  • List your services individually, with a short description of each.
  • Set your service area honestly. If you travel to customers rather than having them visit you, set a service area and hide your address — Google's guidelines require this for service-area businesses.
  • Add real photos of real jobs. Your van, your team, before-and-after work. Not stock images.
  • Keep your hours accurate, including whether you genuinely answer after hours.

Do not invent a location. Listing an address you don't operate from — a virtual office, a mailbox, a friend's house — violates Google's guidelines and is a common reason profiles get suspended. A suspension takes you out of the map pack entirely.

2. One page per service, not one page for everything

A single "Our Services" page listing drain cleaning, water heaters, leak repair and repiping cannot be the best answer to a search for any one of them. Each significant service deserves its own page, written about that service specifically.

A good plumbing service page covers:

  • What the service is, in the customer's words — "blocked drain", not "drainage solutions"
  • The signs that someone needs it — the symptoms they are actually searching for
  • What you do — the process, the equipment, how long it takes
  • The area you cover, stated plainly
  • Pricing guidance, even a range, because "how much does it cost" is one of the most common questions
  • A visible, tappable phone number near the top

The test for each page: if someone searching that specific problem landed on it, would they find their answer and be able to call you within a few seconds?

3. Emergency searches need a different kind of page

A large share of valuable plumbing work starts as an emergency: a burst pipe, a sewage backup, no hot water in winter. Those searches convert on speed and certainty, not on content quality.

For emergency pages specifically:

  • Load fast on a phone over mobile data. A slow page loses an emergency caller to the next result.
  • Put the phone number above the fold, and make sure it works on the first tap.
  • Say whether you answer after hours — and only say so if it's true. Someone with water on the floor needs to know before they call.
  • Keep it short. An emergency visitor isn't reading an essay.

4. Reviews: the prominence lever you control most directly

Reviews contribute to prominence in Google's own description, and they are the thing a homeowner reads before deciding to call. A steady flow of genuine reviews is one of the most effective local SEO activities available.

The practical method is a habit, not a campaign: ask every satisfied customer, at the moment the job is finished, with a direct link to your review page. Reply to reviews — including the critical ones, calmly and specifically.

What to avoid:

  • Never buy reviews or post fake ones. Google's policies prohibit fake engagement, and the US Federal Trade Commission's rules on fake reviews carry real penalties. It is not worth the risk to a business that depends on its local reputation.
  • Don't offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Google's guidelines prohibit it.

5. Make your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, phone number and address (or service area) should read the same on your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you appear in. Inconsistent details make it harder for search engines — and AI assistants — to be sure all those listings describe the same business.

6. Content: useful, but rarely the first priority

Blog content can help a plumbing website, particularly content that answers real questions homeowners ask — whether a problem is urgent, what something typically costs, whether insurance is likely to cover it. One of our clients' sites ranked first organically, directly beneath Google's AI Overview, for a question Winnipeg homeowners search during freeze season about whether insurance covers frozen pipe damage.

But for most plumbing companies, content comes after the profile, the service pages and reviews — not before. A plumber with an excellent blog and an unverified profile is investing in the wrong order.

How long plumbing SEO takes

Honestly: months, and longer for a new website. Large studies of how quickly new pages rank are sobering — Ahrefs tracked two million newly created pages and found only 1.74% reached Google's top ten within a year (Ahrefs).

Local search is more forgiving than national search, because you are competing only with plumbers near you rather than every website on the internet. A verified, complete Google Business Profile can start showing in local results relatively quickly. Organic rankings for competitive terms in a large city take considerably longer.

That gap is why most plumbing companies run Google Ads alongside SEO: ads produce calls now, SEO builds an asset that keeps producing them without paying per click. Neither replaces the other.

What not to waste money on

  • Keyword stuffing — repeating "plumber in [city]" dozens of times. It reads badly and doesn't work.
  • Dozens of near-identical city pages with only the town name changed. Google's spam policies name this pattern as doorway pages.
  • Buying backlinks. Link schemes violate Google's spam policies and can get a site demoted.
  • Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google's results. An agency guaranteeing first place is guaranteeing something it cannot deliver.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important SEO factor for plumbers?

For most plumbing companies, it is a complete, verified and active Google Business Profile. Plumbing searches are overwhelmingly local, and Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence — all reflected in the profile. It typically does more than website content, and it costs nothing but attention.

How long does SEO take for a plumbing company?

Months rather than weeks, and longer for a new website. A complete Google Business Profile can begin appearing in local results relatively quickly, but organic rankings for competitive terms in a large city take considerably longer. Most plumbing companies run Google Ads alongside SEO to cover that gap.

Should a plumber have a separate page for each service?

Yes. A single page listing every service can't be the best answer to a search for any one of them. A dedicated page for each significant service — written about that service, its symptoms and its area — gives Google a clear match and gives the searcher what they came for.

Do reviews really help plumbing SEO?

Yes. Google lists prominence as one of its three main local ranking factors, and reviews feed into it. They also decide whether a homeowner calls. Ask every satisfied customer at the end of the job, and never buy or fake reviews — that violates Google's policies and US federal rules on fake reviews.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for a plumber?

They do different jobs. Google Ads produce calls immediately but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build but keeps producing calls without a cost per click. Most plumbing businesses benefit from ads now and SEO building underneath.
